SOFTBALL SWINGS ARE THE SAME AS BASEBALL SWINGS

There is a common misconception that the softball swing differs greatly from a baseball swing. It’s simply not true. Sure there are slight variations between the two, but the basics are the same. Power and bat speed are generated throughout the hips.
Contrary to popular belief, a softball hitter does not swing down on the ball — just look at a softball swing in contact with the ball. The swing is slightly upwards, with the lead elbow bent slightly and the rear elbow bent at around 90-degrees. The back heel pointed towards the sky, with the back leg at 90-degrees forming a backwards L.
The walk-up tee drill is an outstanding way for softball hitters to develop bat speed and power, just like baseball hitters, by utilizing their lower body and core.
Benefits
This drill teaches explosive hip power and bat speed. It forces your hips to be involved in the swing, which leads to more power, strength and quickness in your swing — as well as curing an upper body dominant swing.
Execution
Preparation: Set up a ball on a tee. Step back a few steps. Stand facing the tee at a 45-degree angle.
- Cross the rear foot in front of the lead foot and plant it on the ground.
- Now take the other foot, which is now the rear foot and step forward, placing yourself where you would be at the beginning of a conventional tee drill.
- Cock the front knee and rotate slightly back
- Next, plant the front foot and explode the hips towards the ball, continuing with the momentum you built and swing through smoothly and explosively.
At first the drill may be broken down, but as you get more comfortable with it, perform it in one smooth, explosive movement. Just remember to follow this simple sequence: 1. Start 2. Step and plant rear leg 3. Knee cock and rear rotation of front leg 4. Swing through and finish.
In no time you’ll find, by focusing on your core, you’re making better contact, generating more power and producing more quality at-bats than ever before.

BRIANNA COMBS STAYS PERFECT!
Brianna Combs continued her dominating ways Tuesday as she blew through Armada to advance to the State Semi-Finals. Having already threw two perfect games in regional she threw another perfect game in the quarter finals. Below is the article from the Detroit News.

Novi — Briana Combs pitched her third perfect game in a row Tuesday in a Division 2 softball quarterfinal against Armada and Livonia Ladywood won 6-0.
“She’s the best-conditioned athlete in the state,” said Scott Combs, her coach and father.
Briana Combs was coming off throwing perfect games this past weekend against Warren Lincoln and Melvindale in the regionals. She kept it going Tuesday, getting eight strikeouts in the process.
Ladywood (37-3) got off to an early lead after a leadoff double by Jennifer Rohn. Combs then doubled her in.
“We knew in that first inning if we got one run, that might be enough,” Scott Combs said.
That’s not to say Armada pitcher Erin Kownacki wasn’t battling for the first five innings. Kownacki struck out 11.
Both teams went down in order in the second and third innings before Ladywood added to its lead in the fourth when Lauren Hayes hit a leadoff double and Andria Gietl doubled her in for a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Ladywood pushed four runs across the plate, Combs scoring the first after a leadoff triple. Freshman Haley Lawrence came off the bench and stole two bases before eventually scoring to pretty much finish Armada’s chances.
“We could tell the pitches were flattening out, so I thought, ‘Let’s not strike out; put the ball in play and we have a chance,’” Scott Combs said.
Briana Combs wasn’t bothered by the long half-inning, retiring the side in order.
She got to a 2-0 count only twice all game and had a three-ball count on only one batter.
Ladywood advances to a state semifinal at 3:30 Friday at Battle Creek’s Bailey Park against Stevensville Lakeshore, a 6-1 winner over Belding.
Armada finished at 25-7.

BRIANNA COMBS: PERFECT IN THE REGIONAL
Briana Combs didn’t allow a baserunner in the Division 2 regional for Livonia Ladywood, leading to perfect-game performances against Warren Lincoln and Melvindale.
“Her drop(ball) and change-up were working well,” Ladywood coach Scott Combs said. “She struck out 13 of 15 against Lincoln and 15 of 18 against Melvindale.”
Ladywood faces Armada in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
“Armada has a great pitcher,” Combs said. “It should be a good test for us.”

LADYWOOD WINS A-B CATHOLIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
FROM THE DETROIT NEWS
Jason Smith/ Special to The Detroit News
Detroit — In a game delayed eight days, Livonia Ladywood defeated Farmington Hills Mercy, 2-1, in 12 innings to win the Catholic League A-B softball championship on Wednesday at Detroit Mercy.
The game originally was scheduled for May 23, but was postponed three times because of rain and suspended once for darkness.
Ladywood pitcher Briana Combs pushed a bunt past a drawn-in infield, scoring Nicole Payne from third in the bottom of the 12th.
“We worked all week on getting the bunt down,” Ladywood coach Scott Combs said. “Once we got into international (tiebreaker) rules, we knew we could get two bunts down.”
The final two innings were played under international rules, which call for each team to start the inning with a runner on second base.
“I don’t like the rule,” Combs said. “It punishes a great pitcher like Kayce (Nieto). Sometimes we can’t ever get a runner on second base, but that’s the way the rule is.
“That’s what’s going to happen in the state tournament.”
The first nine innings, played May 24, were a pitchers’ duel between Combs and Nieto.
Combs allowed one run on five hits and struck out 20, while Nieto yielded two runs on four hits and struck out 21.
Mercy (19-7) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a suicide squeeze bunt by Meghan Tarrance. Ladywood (30-3) tied the game on a two-out RBI single by Carli Sanmillan.
Nieto and Combs each gave up one hit the next five innings.
With the game tied 1-1 after nine innings, it was suspended and scheduled for the next day. Rain, however, postponed the game twice and the holiday weekend stretched the delay an extra four days.
“It was a disappointment waiting 10 days to play, in effect, three innings,” Mercy coach Jack Falvo said. “Ladywood is a great team. They’re well coached, and we knew the longer the game was going to go, we would be under duress.”
The game finally resumed Wednesday in the 10th inning, and Elizabeth Carlson started things for Mercy with a one-out double. But Combs struck out Jacquelyn Murphy and Carlson was thrown out attempting to steal third to end the inning.
Ladywood and Mercy are no strangers to long games. Mercy defeated Ladywood in 23 innings last year to win the Catholic League title. Both teams are headed to the state tournament.
“I told every single one of them in line that I hope to see every one of them in Battle Creek (for the state finals),” Scott Combs said. “If we can get there, I know they’ll get there. They are a very good team.”

PLAYER PROFILE: BRIANA COMBS
(Stats might differ from time article was written)
After already receiving 1st Team All State honors as a freshman, Briana Combs has stepped up her game to become easily one on of the top rated softball pitchers in Michigan. Her record at 19-2 with a sub.25 era, has helped her lead Ladywood to a 21-2 record and huge tournament wins such as the Michigan Stars Tournament (where she was named tournament MVP).
One of the big obstacles she faced entering her junior season was not the level of competition from other top schools, but was the rule change concerning the distance of the mound to home plate. Before this year, the distance of the mound to home was 40ft. The rule change moved the mound back 3ft to 43ft. While this doesn’t seem like a huge difference, when learning to get your pitches to move perfectly in a direction of drop at a certain distance, that 3ft could prove devastating to any pitcher.
Briana didn’t miss a beat.
Take it from her Coach Scott:
Brie hasn’t missed a beat with the rule change. I would say she is 50% better than she was a year ago. Her training at 2SP has really improved her overall strength both pitching and hitting”
Through extensive training at 2SP, Briana worked out 2 days a week to strengthen her legs and body, so that she could enter the season strong and dominate. She compliments her 59-60 mph fastball with a sick drop, rise, change, and curve ball. Briana’s arm strength allows her to pitch 3-4 games a day. This may seem like a lot, but to Briana its just another walk in the park. She usually ends her day with more pitches at home just to make sure she stays on her game.
Oh…Lets not forget about her bat. A cool .580 average.
