WILL METER WINS MR. LACROSSE AWARD: BROTHER RICE

From miprepzone.com

Shortly after winning its seventh straight MHSAA state championship, the accolades continued to roll in for the Birmingham Brother Rice lacrosse program.

Brother Rice senior midfielder Will Meter was named Mr. Lacrosse, becoming the ninth Warrior in the past 11 seasons – seven under MHSAA affiliation and 10th overall – to win the state’s highest individual lacrosse award.

“The one main thing to say about Will is that he’s the type of player that puts the team first,” Brother Rice coach Rob Ambrose said. “He’s got a tremendous work ethic, he’s a true team player and he really made sacrifices for us to make the team better. He could care less about his individual stats, so long as the team succeeds, so it’s just nice to see a kid with that kind of mindset and work ethic get rewarded.”

Meter accounted for 113 points (45 goals, 68 assists) this season for the Warriors and ended the season with two goals and four assists in the state championship game against Ada Forest Hills Eastern-Northern. As a three-year varsity player, it was the third state championship team he’s been a part of.

“It’s awesome to be a part of that tradition,” Meter said after the Warriors won the state title. “Over the years, we really try and push for the triple crown (league, state and Midwest titles) and we all come together on that goal and really strive for it. It’s a great way to approach the season because it makes sure everybody sets a high standard and it gives us something to look forward to at the end of the year. I just tried to be a leader and set an example along with the rest of the guys on this team to hold each accountable.”

Meter, an All-American selection, missed much of last year with an injury, but quickly got caught up to speed with the Warriors this season.

“His work ethic has always been tremendous,” Ambrose said. “This year he became a team captain and just kept getting better and better. He sets a good example for our younger players to follow. We’ve got a great coaching staff that puts a lot of work in, but at the end of the day, if you don’t have senior leadership, you’re not going to win. You need leadership and work ethic and Will showed both of those consistently.”

As part of a deep offensive attack which featured four other All-American selections in Riley Kennedy, K.C. Kennedy, Bennett Packer and Henry Nelson, Meter settled into more of a facilitator role for the Warriors this season.

“My role kind of changed this year and I really became more of a feeder, which worked out well within our system because we’ve got so many guys who can score,” Meter said.

Meter is signed to play for the University of Michigan next season. He, along with Brother Rice goalie Christian Eckert will be part of the first varsity lacrosse team at Michigan when the Wolverines take the field next season. Michigan announced it would be adding lacrosse as a varsity sport earlier this year.

BROTHER RICE WINS 7TH STRAIGHT D1 LACROSSE TITLE

BY PERRY A. FARRELL DETROIT FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

In an attempt to inspire his team against the six-time boys defending state lacrosse champion, Forest Hills Eastern-Northern coach Jake Heglund showed his players the movie “Miracle On Ice” on the bus drive Saturday from Grand Rapids to Birmingham Seaholm.

“We’re fired up,” Heglund said before the Division 1 championship game against Birmingham Brother Rice. It’s as much emotional as X’s and O’s playing at this stage. We’re relying on our team being a family.”

But an upset wasn’t in the script for Heglund’s squad.

Brother Rice (19-4) scored two goals, six seconds apart, in the first minute en route to its seventh straight title with a 15-4 victory. The Warriors played most of the fourth period with a 12-goal lead and a running clock, a first in Division 1 history.

“We tried to jump on them early in this great atmosphere,” said senior Will Meter, who had two goals and four assists and finished the season with 111 points. “I got hurt as a junior and didn’t play a lot, but this season I got a lot of time like my sophomore year.”

Sergio Perkovic opened the scoring at the 11:06 mark and six seconds later Riley Kennedy tacked on the first of his four goals.

“A big part of this season was we never lost to a team in the state of Michigan,” said Kennedy. “We know the goal each year is to get here.”

Rice entered the title game with its four losses coming to teams from Ohio and Illinois.

Meter scored at the 8:42 mark, followed by goals from K.C. Kennedy, Andy Hebden and Mackenzie MacEachern as the Warriors led 6-0 after one quarter and built the lead to 10-0 at halftime.

Connor Sullivan scored the first goal for Eastern-Northern (17-2) with 3:29 left in the third quarter. Alex Ottenwess scored about two minutes later in the quarter. Charlie Stormzand added two goals in the fourth quarter.

Eastern-Northern’s Alex VanSlyke came into the title game with 65 goals and 34 assists, but Rice held him to an assist on Ottenwess’ goal.

As for Brother Rice, coach Rob Ambrose fielded a young squad this season. The Warriors had just nine seniors.

“We’ve kind of grown up all year,” said Ambrose. “We don’t have a lot of seniors. It has been a growing process for us all year. We worked the kids pretty hard. We expect a lot out of them. They know exactly what we expect from them in terms of improvement in their individual game and how that works within our team. These kids love the game and they love to play.”
